"While not technically a machina in the strictest sense, Animats are still considered a type of Golem, though more commonly referred to as Living Armour.

Souls of the fallen dead who still linger on the past battlefields and in places of their demise, are given new life by Necroficers, who use experimental golemantic magics and glyphs to inscribe the soul onto the suit of armour itself.

Only the strongest wills are able to retain their independent thoughts and sanity, while weaker minds break and become one of the Withered undead. Those who pass the test often go to the city of Necrostos. Here they typically become a member of one of the Chained Orders; temples and orders consistent entirely of other knightly Animats who formerly fought and died as dedicated paladins and templars."
