They were created by the Empire Beneath and its Chitric people; a civilization and people which has fallen into extinction. All that remains are their underground ruins, their lost secrets, and the Dredge.

Many Dredge remain underground, continuing the work of their masters; still blindly enslaved like drones in a hive. It wasn't until Opthis, God of Slaves and Machines, arrived that he freed the first Dredge of their mindwashed devotion to a gone empire, which allowed them to finally pursue their own goals, traditions, and beliefs."
