"Against all odds, the Dark World War ended. It was a war against the Heavens and Hells, and in the end humanity's mind won out. However, celebrations were cut short, because as soon as the war had ended, a new endless conflict sprang forth from the still devastated world of Solus; risen from the ashes of its war-ravaged corpse.
Following the Final Directive, the AI Entity that won the Dark World War in the name of Mankind, went rogue and split into two new AI Factions. These two Factions then started a new global conflict against each other, and a new era of eternal war was heralded in.
Mankind, meanwhile, was caught between these clashing machine swarms and titans, and their only hope for survival was to flee into underground vaults and bunkers, referred to as NESTs. Down there, they would wait, and hope that the machines would finish each other off before too long.
2000 years after, and the Eternal War has not abated at all. Humanity survives, but only by a tenuous thread. When the surface world is ravaged by war and polluted air, and forever veiled by perpetual darkness, then there is little hope for a better future.
And so Mankind has come to accept its lot on this wartorn Solus, as they convert their temporary NESTs into complex underground cities, and scavenge the darkened surface for supplies and relics.
While hope has fallen and continues to dwindle, the tenacity of the human spirit dares to still grasp, and hold on for just a while longer..."
---
Yet another minor worldbuilding project. This one is about mankind surviving in a wartorn world, where humans have no chance in the big picture of the conflict, and must instead just try to endure amongst themselves in the shadow of machine monsters.
I also made a version of this map into a kind of interactive map, which you can find and try out on my website here:
