"Beyond storm, salt, and darkness, there is a city where the regrets of the Old Land are replaced by new sins; drenched in rain, blood, and oil, as steel beasts howl in the night."
Nearly 100 years ago in the northern territories of the New Verd, a small penal colony was set up by the Grand Caden Empire on a small island at the mouth of a blackened river, and for a brief time the colony served to hold deported criminals of the Old Verd; discarded and forgotten by their homelands. It wouldn't last, as free colonists would arrive a few years after to settle in the area, and from their growth during those two first decades arose a city, and the penal colony was decommissioned and merged with this new city of Durncrest, and its prisoners granted a new chance. In time the city would continue to grow and develop rapidly, and it became the most industrially advanced city in the Colonial States of Cadonia.
Durncrest is also known as the City of Hounds, much due to its Dunfolken history and ancestors, who were the first to settle in the city during its early days. The Dunfolk hail from the Dunyedlands in the Old Verd, where they have cultivated a culture obsessed with dogs and wolves. But in Durncrest, the hounds are not only of flesh and blood, but also of steel and oil. The true beasts of Durncrest are its ever-howling factories and machines, which refine and produce the majority of industrial needs in the Colonial States, where Ether Oil is its most vital export. All other cities of the Caden Commonwealth in the New Verd rely heavily on Durncrest's ability to refine and distribute Ether Oil, so that their Ether-Electric machines can continue to function.
Despite Durncrest's importance, it is still a city of struggles. There are threats inherent in the land itself, such as the plantborne infestations of the Bloom, the soured clans of the local Caidhe natives, and the supernatural dangers of fey-like anomalies that plague the colonies of the New Verd. In addition, Durncrest itself faces many issues from within, such as the discontent of labourers and unions, the violent tensions between integrated Caidhe and Durnholders, the whispers of Old Verd darkness and shadows hiding in the hearts of men, and the rising troubles of gangs and their street wars, spurred on by the fiery words and funds of rebel-rousers.
Durncrest's people face many challenges and potential threats in their daily lives, and it is up to individuals of noteworthiness to take charge of their own fates in this city of howling beasts.
